The Odious Machine

The Odious Machine

"There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!"

Sorry, I tried to post a comment on your thoughts above this, didn't think it worked, put it here and it ended up being in both places, so I erased the one here.

This speech was part of a protest in the 60's. There were many protests at Berkeley in the 60's and 70's.

Two things that I neglected to say in the above post.
You might not think voting is enough to do and you might choose to do something else. But first check the statistics on eligible voters and how many really vote, I think you'll find that many people don't exercise that priviledge. One way you could make a difference is encouraging your friends to vote. If you don't vote and someone gets in and does what you think is a horrible job, you have no right to complain.
And please, don’t believe everything that people from that era tell you (myself included). Those were sad times and occasionally evil times. Find some books that show both sides and decide for yourself what went on back then. If you don't know both sides to a story, you have nothing to compare.
I'm sorry that you are just now learning about the Vietnam era. It was a very sad time for many people my age and the parents of the people who died, both in the war and at home. Some people don't like to talk about it. I know my children have read about it at school and we’ve talked about it at home. I want them to know what happened during the Vietnam War and how it changed our world forever.
You are a good person to want to make a difference in our world. Most people sit back and just wait for things to happen, you are trying to change that. God Bless, Kitty
